Toxoplasma - not a fungus, but there are parallels

Two recent high profile papers in PLoS Biology and PNAS (not open access) on Toxoplasma gondii are reminiscent of fungal pathogen dynamics from.  Like fungal pathogens these Eukaryotic parasites are quite polymorphic in their interactions with hosts and show evidence of population structure that can be complicated by recent admixture and uneven recombination across the genome. The parallels between routes of evolution for fungal parasites of animals and other Eukaryotic pathogens seem to be mounting, and this recent Pearl about one mechanism of chromosomal evolution is perhaps another good example.
