Penicillium chrysogenum

Alex Browne, an undergraduate medical student, has been collecting airborne fungi around London. He has developed PCR based markers that can distinguish the four species of Penicillium discussed in this paper (DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-294X.2011.05244.x) including the one Alexander Fleming stumbled upon that led to the development of penicillin. We've talked about these fungi before, but now we're connecting them to this work too (10.5598/imafungus.2011.02.01.12). The recent publishing of a P. chrysogenum genome to go along with the genome from P. rubens (Fleming's fungus) looks promising. I hope that we can get closer to understanding the ecology of these fungi that are everywhere in addition to understanding the routes of secondary metabolite production and evolution.
